OpenStack Orchestrated Network Service Chaining - Su-Hun Yun, Hideyuki Tai, and Masashi Kudo, NEC Corporation America

SDN with NFV (Network Function Virtualization) enables service chaining among L4 to L7 
network appliances such as LB (load balancer), WAN Optimization and security devices 
(FireWall, DDoS mitigation) as VNSs (Virtual Network Services).  These VNSs can be 
deployed as VM (virtual appliance) orchestrated by OpenStack. 
  OpenDaylight Virtual Tenant Network (VTN) is an OpenDaylight project focus on 
network virtualization and a set of technology components that provide a multi-tenant 
virtual network on OpenDaylight controller. VTN is South bound protocol independent 
architecture and OpenFlow was implemented as the first protocol to control both physical 
and virtual network resources. The VTN also provides NB-API for its applications so that 
they don’t require knowing all the details of physical plane’s complexity and can program 
the logical network via NB-API.  .  
  VTN has ability to accept policy from higher layer orchestrators and policy managers 
for translation into device specific configuration. As an applications, VTN interworks with 
OpenStack Neutron ML2 via Neutron Service in OpenDaylight controller.  VTN also 
provides NB-API of service chaining policy so that users can implement their service 
insertion policies on the fly. 
Once OpenStack deploy a VM of VNSs, it will work with VTN NB-API via Neutron and 
automatically create VTN and provides service provisioning for both physical and virtual 
switches. Then, users can provide their VNS policy using VTN NB-API on demand.  VTN will 
steer the selected flows to selected VNSs as the central point of management and control 
without traffic disruption.   
This presentation will discuss the OpenStack integration with OpenDaylight VTN and 
service function chaining on OpenDaylight controller.  It will also provide step by step live 
demonstrations of these scenarios.
