John Sobanski demonstrates how ODL can augment (not replace) your current architecture to optimize performance, maximize uptime and streamline operations. John Sobanski describes a proof of concept project that implements the Service Function Chaining (SFC) service on the ODL controller platform, demonstrating a northbound service agnostic of the southbound interfaces to the Network Elements (NE). The presentation begins with a definition of the problem space, that legacy (ossified) network technologies tie network services to hardware and topology. John depicts a real world scenario, a multi-data center service flow that experiences redundant (and un-necessary) firewall and deep packet inspection (DPI) at each data center hop, which injects severe latency into the segment round trip time. John uses ODL to remove redundancies with both the SFC service and custom RESTCONF API calls.
